Bukit Lawang and its near surroundings (3-Hour Tours)

These are two fantastic tour options to discover the village of Bukit Lawang and its near surroundings. First you will walk downstream along Bohorok River for about half an hour, passing the village centre with its small tourist shops. Our Bat Cave Walk will then take you out of the village to green surroundings, heading towards Landak River. The cave features three “rooms” full of stalagmites and stalactites. Joining our tour to the local Friday Market you will walk along irrigation canals to the village of Gotong Royong where the local market takes place. This is where villagers sell rubber, fruit and vegetable, chicken, fish and all basic day-to-day provisions. These two short tours can be organized separately or as a combination.

Tour description

This memorable EcoTravel tour starts at 9:00 am with a leisurely 3 km walk from Bukit Lawang to the famous Bat Cave. The cave features three “rooms” full of stalagmites and stalactites, with countless bats on its roof and swallows on its walls. Lit by torch lights, this impressive cave system will be shown to you by our guide. This tour is not recommended for people inclined to claustrophobic fits.

Every Friday a typical market offering local produce is held in the village of Gotong Royong next to Bukit Lawang. This is where villagers sell rubber, fruit and vegetable, chicken, fish and all basic day-to-day provisions. There you will capture the spirit of rural North Sumatra, a colourful place to get in touch with Indonesian culture and local life. Your guide will answer all your questions about local products and help you digging deep into village life.
